The history of the dalahorse dates back to the 17th century, when small wooden horses were sold in the markets of Dalarna in central Sweden. A hundred years later wooden horses were carved by men working in the forests during long winter evenings and brought back to the village for the children to play with.

In 1928, brothers Nils and Jannes Olsson resumed the old craft, and since then real dalahorses have been made in their workshop in Nusnäs, Dalarna. Each Dalahorse is unique, hand carved and hand decorated and each artist works with its own pattern.

The dalahorse became famous at the world exhibition in New York 1939. Today, this is one of the most known symbols of Sweden and the most recognized Swedish folk art internationally.
